The 2022 Telecommunications Industry Trend: 5G
5G is the 5th generation new global wireless network standard after 1G, 2G. 3G and 4G networks. 5G is a new technology that enables us to connect everyone and everything virtually including machines, objects, and devices. The 5G telecommunications technology will deliver multi-Gbps data at ultra-high speeds with low latency, more reliability, increased availability, and massive network capacity.
There are several companies that worked together to bring 5G into life. Qualcomm played a major role in inventing many foundational technologies that build up 5G, the next generation of wireless standards. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project is the industry organization that determines the global specifications for 4G LTE and 5G technologies. It is also driving many essential innovations like air interface to the service layer for all the aspects of 5G.
The 5G technology is based on OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing). It is a technique of modulating a digital signal across many different channels to reduce interference. 5G utilizes both 5G NR air interfaces along with OFDM principles. A good feature about 5G OFDM is that it is based on the same mobile networking principles as 4G LTE. However, the 5G NR air interface will further enhance the OFDM to deliver a higher degree of flexibility and scalability.
5G will level up the technology and bring wider bandwidths by expanding the usage of spectrum resources. Nowadays, sub-3 GHz is used in 4G, and with 5G it will go up to 100GHz and beyond. Another aspect of 5G is that it can operate in both lower bands of sub-6 GHz to high-level mmWave of 24 GHz and above. 5G will not only deliver faster but expand new service areas such as connecting the larger masses and mission-critical communications.
