WA launches a new way to report illegal robocalls
29 March 2022, Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson launched a new form for people to report illegal robocalls. There are two types of robocalls- the one that comes from an automated system and plays a recorded message is legal, and the ones that ask for donations, and about political candidates are illegal.
Illegal robocalls can be a scam to steal the identity and money of people. Earlier the Washingtonians could report suspicious calls through the attorney general’s office general consumer complaint form. Now, the new complaint form for robocalls will provide more precise information and quicker action to complaints.
Ferguson’s office said, “It has resources to track suspected illegal robocallers once people report a call and provide their number along with the exact time and date of the call, even when the caller identification is fake.” In March 2021, a lawsuit was filed by several attorneys general and the FTC resulting in two companies paying $495,000 to legitimate charities for making 1.7 billion robocalls.
